The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have declared an indefinite nationwide strike over the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage from N60,000 and their refusal to reverse the electricity tariff hike.

They made the declaration at a news conference on Friday, in Abuja.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, and President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osito, said the strike action was unavoidable.

Ossify and Ajaero, who revealed that the strike action will commence on Monday, said this followed the failure of the government to announce a new minimum wage and reverse the hike in electricity tariff among others.

The strike is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 3, 2024, and will continue until the government meets the demands of the NLC and TUC.

The demands are Increasing the minimum wage

to N615,500, Reversing the electricity tariff hike from N225/kwh to N65/kwh, Stopping the categorization of consumers into Bands and Passing the agreed wage into law.

The strike is expected to affect all sectors, including transportation, healthcare, and education. The NLC and TUC have called on all affiliates, state councils, civil society organizations, market men and women, and the general populace to unite in demanding the government’s attention to the welfare of its people.

They apologised for the inconvenience this will create for Nigerians but said it was the only logical thing to do.
